What Types of Rooms in the Data Center?

data center rooms

Supporting areas for the data center ( fire suppression, environment control, electrical power, etc.) has an important role in the overall performance of the data center.

these supporting areas will be described in detail one by one:

- holding area:

in this area, goods and tools are received, inspected and unpacked, and prepared for the staging area. it should have these properties: easy access (loading bay), large enough to handle equipment, and easy disposal of garbage and it must be secure by CCTV or guards because it is an entrance to the data center.

staging area:

this area is for testing the h/w and s/w of the devices. in addition, the devices will be configured in this area so this area must have good environmental conditions and a fire fighting system. this area should have separate PDU connected to separate UPS and network access.

- computer room area:

this area is the core of the data center as it has devices that run 24*7 with no risk of interruption. this area must have a separate and secure place, good environmental conditions, a fire fighting system, good power quality, and a low electromagnetic field.

media storage room:

this room is for the storage tapes and other storage media so it must have good environmental conditions with stable humidity and temperature. also, fire protection system. this room must be in another building than the data center because it has master copies prepared to use in severe disasters.

UPS room:

this room provides secure and conditioned space for the UPS system which operates on a 24*7 basis. this room must be equipped with a fire protection system. there are small ups modules in the computer room which don't exceed 100 KVA in power. ups systems emit an electromagnetic field which affects the performance of the electronic devices so 2 or 3 racks spaces must be separated between IT and UPS racks.

- battery room:

this room has the batteries required for the ups system. this space must be separated from the UPS system as it has hydrogen gases which are highly explosive so this space must be vented to release these gases, especially for wet cell batteries and vrla batteries didn't require this option. this room has a conditioned space to increase the life span of batteries and the fire protection system.

- service corridor:

this area is conditioned and has a fire fighting system because this area is used to maintain and service various data centers equipment like air conditioning and fire fighting systems. also, there are many options to separate computer room and CRAC units.

- standby generator set area:

this space is for generators and must be separated and has a fire fighting system. fuel tanks can be underground or above ground based on local regulations. this place must be secured and tested for vibrations and their effect on the building.

meet me area:

it provides a safe production space where the fiber carrier operates 24*7 without the risk of interruption. so this room must have air conditioning, a fire fighting system, and be monitored by BMS as it is always in a remote place or the basement of the building. also, this room may be inside the data center hall.

- security room:

it has all the security personnel and equipment. so it must be secured and it has fire protection and good power quality.

- network operation center:

it is a secured space that can be combined with the security space. this space has the facilities required to monitor all ICT infrastructure. it must have air conditioning and good power quality. it shouldn't be placed inside the data center hall because of safety and health reasons.
