Oxygen reduction system for the Data Center - part 1

 1-What is oxygen reduction system?

  • An Oxygen Reduction System is a fire protection technique which is not designed to extinguish a fire, but is designed to prevent a fire from originating in the first instance and therefore prevent damage from occurring.
  • It reduces the oxygen level in the room from 20.9% to 15%.
  • an oxygen content of 15% is perfectly suitable for human life but is not sufficient to support combustion or an ignition source, as most flammable solid materials and liquids cannot ignite in environments with an oxygen level lower than 16%.

  • 2- Effect of reduced oxygen on health

    3-Components of oxygen reduction system:

    • compressor units.
    • generator units.
    •  filters.
    •  buffer vessels.
    • control unit or control centre.
    • sensing elements in the protected space.
    •  The plant requirements consume little space compared to conventional fire suppression systems.

4- What is oxygen reduction system?

    • The oxygen reduction system can also be monitored at the Fire Indicator Panel and the BMS for alarms such as low oxygen fault, general fault etc.
    • offering full redundancy by installing a second compressor and generator units which will provide a N+1 arrangement to improve failure safety
    • The system can easily be installed in already existing premises as well as in newly built spaces.
    •  Air with an oxygen content of 5% is injected into the protected room.
