Various studies shows that more power failures per month will cause computers to lock up or loss of files or damaged equipment. the users may consume many hours to diagnose the fault to know the problem is the quality of the power source. although UPS filter voltage but it can't fully isolate the equipment from power disturbances . because the ground line must be connected all time and UPS can't do anything about it.
higher transistors numbers and higher clock rates in compact sizes will lead to high power consumption and high cooling density. every four years the power consumption and heat release duplicates.
chip manufacturer are working to increase processor power and decreasing power consumption like Intel that produce a 80 core processor with power consumption of 62 watt only. so we can't predict what will happen in the market in the next 5 years.
the data center's electricity is fed from the utility grid and in case of power failure and to reserve the redundancy, the data center must have backup generator set. automatic transfer switch (ATS) must be installed between the generator and the utility to transfer the power from each others.
ATS is mechanical device which ATS work on the principle of break before make which mean that there is small break (> 50 ms) before transferring to the other electrical source. in this break the racks and IT equipment is fed from the batteries of the UPS. we can use two UPS not only one and make a load sharing between them to increase the redundancy of the UPS as UPS can fail or need to be maintained.
the data center can be fed by two power utility sources to increase the redundancy at this level as one utility source can fail. static transfer switch ( STS ) must be used to transmit the power to IT devices that has single power supply because the STS has very low break time (<20 ms) as it work on electronic circuit not mechanical. IT equipment can withstand shorty period of power failure without disturbance.
we can make a redundancy on the STS level by putting another STS which lead to both sources will be on for the IT equipment all the time. the power source in this case will be (A+B).
